I went to a Hardcore gig on Sunday with Nick, Yu Foong, Sam and Elvis. It was in the city at this place called the MCPA Hall. I had a grea time, we had a hard time finding the place but with enough driving around and directions from strangers we eventually found the place. It was in this Chinese Buddhist buliding. It was funny, we passed a Buddhist seminar as we were going up the stairs and I laughed because we were about to enter a sweaty, humid room with violent music and hardcore dancing.
Outside was a mix of Hardcore kids smoking and very religious, conservative chinese couples. I thought to myself, "Wow, this would never happen in Brunei!"
The main band of the night was this band called, "Horse the Band" from L.A. They called themselves Nintendocore because they used 8BIT sound effects over brutal vocals, heavily distorted guitar and thick blasting. I was pretty impressed with the local Hardcore bands and the bands that I thought stood out the most were "LoveMeButch" and "Restrain". I really enjoyed these two bands because they got the crowd really worked up. Of course LoveMeButch was a big favourite because they are really famous in Asia. Restrain just got the crowd into a frenzy of hardcore dancing and moshing.
After accompanying the guys for a cigarette, I headed back in and I saw the LoveMeButch's guitarist, Ming, standing by one of the merchandise tables. Yu Foong and I took the opportunity and headed straight over to him. He shook our hand and asked us where we were from and what sort of scene there was in Brunei. I told him that they were well known in Brunei and I saw them on T.V a lot. I also informed him of the local Brunei favourite, Airholes, and how they were really big fans and that their lead guitarist Ardy was a huge fan of him.
Ming was very modest about his guitar playing and told me to send his regards to my friend Ardy. I was also very flattered when he asked us to come to their show in Zouk, where they'd be playing alongisde a famous Post-Hardcore Punk band from America called "Comeback Kid". We'all defintiely head down and give our support.
In the mosh pit I got elbowed in the eye, punched in the side and headbutted in the face. But it was all worth it, a good 25rm well spent for about ten bands.
Wasn't really impressed with Horse The Band though, I thought the local bands were much better!
I wish, there was some way, that you would feel for me the way I feel for you.
